Pre Market Commentary ...

The hungry bulls will look at lapping up whatever comes their way. Value and rationale could take a backseat. The scary rollercoaster ride of the previous few sessions will take a break, as risk aversion has subsided somewhat after China dismissed a report saying it was mulling paring its holding of European bonds. This helped spark a world-wide rally in equities and commodities. The euro too rebounded while gold dipped and the VIX – Wall Street’s fear gauge – dropped below 30 after surging past 44 not too long ago.

After long, we have a bright morning to start with as we stare at a gap-up opening and hopefully another day of solid gains. Asian markets are upbeat following the overnight bounce in the US as well as European markets. Still, it would be foolhardy to take the recent pull-back in stocks as a decisive turnaround and start buying aggressively. The problems in Europe and other advanced economies have not vanished. So, one expects the volatility to persist for some time to come owing to uncertainty about the global picture.

What we are witnessing lately is more of a relief rally from the lows hit in the current intermediate downtrend. This advance has to sustain for a while to restore investor confidence. Also, FIIs - who have been net sellers for quite some time - have to resume their buying spree. Even prior to the current falls, the Indian market had struggled to break out of a range. We have to see whether this time is different and the key indices will head higher after dust settles on the euro-zone debt crisis.

Pre Market Commentary ...

A bounce back is on the cards at start, thanks largely to a late session rebound on Wall Street. But then remember, bouncing is more like crashing….except you get to do it over and over again. Asian markets are mostly positive, barring the Kospi in Seoul, which is still reeling under the geopolitical tension. The European markets failed to benefit from the recovery in US stocks and ended sharply lower. In fact, markets in Italy, Portugal and Ireland joined Spain and Greece in bear-market territory. The FTSE 100 closed below 5,000.

German finance ministry is reportedly proposing extending the naked short-selling ban to include all German-listed stocks. The bill is due to be discussed next week. Italy has joined Europe's austerity club with deep spending cuts.

What this means is that unknown fears remain and randomness is the order of the day. Volatility is very high and so are uncertainties and risks. With the F&O expiry a day away it only gets wilder. Any sharp snap-back should be used to lighten your mental burden rather than adding positions.

Amidst all the gloom and doom, we can comfort ourselves with the fact that India’s macro-economic outlook is pretty sound though monsoon needs to be watched closely. Latest GDP data, which will be out on Monday will offer some more inputs of ground realities.

Pre Market Commentary ...

The bears seem to be at an advantage with the European debt crisis continuing to cast a shadow over global economic recovery. News of the Bank of Spain bailing out savings bank CajaSur is a stark reminder that not all is well with European banks.

The euro erased some of last week’s gains to slip over 1.5% against the dollar. US stocks too closed in the red after a choppy session. Asian markets are down sharply, led by the Nikkei in Japan. Stocks in China have turned lower after Monday’s big rally.

We expect our market to start lower amid weak global cues. Lesser the risk, lesser the loss seems to be the mantra for now as major world markets are trading below key technical support levels.
The whole of Europe is on an austerity overdrive. The UK too has unveiled spending cuts to rein in budget deficit. This will further delay a return to pre-Lehman era. Overall trend remains down but some pull-back is bound to come at lower levels. On Monday, the market opened higher but closed nearly flat.

Today being a Tuesday, a turnaround at the end of the day is not ruled out completely. The key is not to get carried away by any short-covering led bounce as the equity markets remain hostage to headline risk. Volatility will spurt this week owing to Thursday's F&O expiry.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Nearly five years after the big Reliance empire was split, the warring Ambani brothers have decided to bury the hatchet. The new peace deal in the Ambani family will surely prove to be a sentiment-booster for our market, which was starved of positive triggers. It’s a no-brainer that shares of the two Reliance groups will steal the limelight, although one is still not sure of the long-term impact of the truce. What’s more, Asian markets, barring Japan, are mostly positive. The good news is that the rally is being led by China, which has been the worst-performing market this year. A meeting of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue takes place in Beijing until May 25. The strength of the Chinese currency is a likely topic.

Given the feel-good backdrop, we expect a firm opening and perhaps a positive finish too. If global cues remain supportive and there are no fresh mishaps, the markets will be able to regain some of the lost ground. Some risks may still persist mainly due to concerns about the European sovereign debt problems and possible overheating in China. In the immediate future, the key events to watch out for will be next week’s GDP report and progress of monsoon. A spate of global data points will also have to be factored in. The market may remain choppy owing to the F&O expiry on Thursday and continuing uncertainty over the euro-zone debt crisis.
