Today,we expect a gap-down opening on the bourses, given the extremely weak cues coming from international financial markets. Dow Jones fell overnight after its economy grew less than expected in the second quarter even as unemployment rose. Thursday’s rangebound movement indicates that the market is apprehensive over the near-term direction.

Aggressive buying should be avoided for a while. The undertone is still bearish. Rising interest rates, higher inflation and concern on the US economy remain the areas of concern.

Asian markets are not showing any encouraging signs for the moment. Unexpected gain in jobs and government help for the financial and housing sectors propped up US indices. The Dow Jones gained 186 points, rising 1.6%. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index added 1.7%, but the Nasdaq rose just 0.4%.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today,the gains of Wednesday may spill over briefly at start. With F&O expiry, the usual choppiness will continue. Moreover, with expectations that inflation may remain higher (it would be released after market hours today) extreme volatility could be the order of the day. The best bet would be to lock in gains wherever you can and keep juggling your portfolio based on the short term swings. With Oil prices rising around $5 a barrel on Wednesday fresh worries could emanate later.

Though the confidence is not yet back with the bulls, but given Wednesday’s positive momentum, the bulls would surely hope for a positive start. Furthermore, the global cues are also encouraging. However, traders should not get carried away with the current euphoria. The optimal strategy would be to lock in gains at every rally as economy worries continue to persist and market will take some more time to absorb the impact of the recent rate hike by the RBI. Expiry of the derivatives contract for the month of July along with the release of weekly inflation numbers after the market hours could keep the indices volatile.

Asian markets trading firm this morning,

Asian markets trading firm this morning,the Nikkei in Tokyo was up 1.2% at 13,315 while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong climbed nearly 2% to 22,688. The Kospi in Seoul gained 0.7% to 1578 while the Straits Times in Singapore rose 1.1% to 2917.

Asian stocks rose after better-than- expected earnings from Matsushita Electric and oil prices at a 12-week low eased concern that slowing global growth will hurt earnings. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index gained 1.1% to 131.56 as of 10:57 a.m. in Tokyo. Five stocks rose for each that declined, with nine of the index's 10 industry groups advancing.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs5.38bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Tuesday and the local funds offloaded shares worth Rs2.55bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers of Rs14.57bn. On Monday, FIIs were net sellers of Rs6.09bn in the cash segment. Mutual Funds were net buyers of Rs2.04bn.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today,indices could see a dead-cat bounce, tracking gains across global markets and drop in oil prices. However, stability will only return if there are any major triggers like a sharp fall in oil prices and revival in monsoon. Yet again, the latest move by YV Reddy surprised the markets, which were looking for RBI to maintain a status quo on interest rates. This will raise general interest rates in economy and will lead to a slowdown in investment and demand. The Governor also lowered his economy forecast to 8% from 8-8.5% pegged at the start of the financial year.

We expect the market to remain weak in the near term.
The market may turn volatile after a good start ahead of tomorrow's F&O expiry.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs7.22bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Monday and the local funds pumped in Rs4.57bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers of Rs6.37bn. On Friday, FIIs were net sellers of Rs5.46bn in the cash segment.

Today,we expect bears to be in command at least till noon, especially with global markets trading deep in the red. Thereafter, RBI’s monetary policy will take center-stage. The RBI in its quarterly economic survey released on Monday stated that India’s budget deficit may come under pressure this year. The survey also revealed that corporates are uncertain about whether the overall business situation would improve in the July-September quarter. Any hike in key rates could provide bears fresh opportunity to dominate. On the other hand, a status quo could lead to a short-term rally on the street.

Today,we expect history to get repeated today. After a cautious to lower opening, things should start looking up again, especially if oil prices remain stable or fall further, and global markets hold up. Another positive could be the strong revival in monsoon, which should ease inflationary expectations.

After a five-day, 2300-point rally in the Sensex, the bulls decided to take stock of the situation. Hence, the correction in the last two days. Friday's serial blasts in IT hub Bangalore made matters worse. Sentiment may get hit further (albeit temporarily) by weekend blasts in Ahmedabad. History shows that stock markets have bounced back in the aftermath of terrorist strikes.
