Today, we expect a cautious to higher opening and a choppy day ahead amid lack of major positive triggers. Things could turn volatile given the mixed trend across global markets. While the markets in the US and Europe advanced overnight, stock benchmarks in Asia are trading lower after yesterday's strong rally. This, coupled with the economic headwinds, both globally as well as locally, could hamper the progress of the bulls.

Also, the FIIs - who tend to play a big role in determining the market's direction - have been selling continuously over the past few days. Local funds, who have been buying gradually, do not have the strength to offset the outflows from overseas investors. Neither is it their agenda to do so.

Today, the market is likely to remain sideways and rangebound, as it tries to break free. Looking at the movement of the indices of last few sessions, the choppiness is likely to continue. Short-covering in key index heavyweights may have led the recovery from day’s low on Tuesday.
Nevertheless, we don’t see any major upside coming in from these levels. At the moment, lack of immediate triggers could make indices move in either direction. The usual intra-day swings will continue to keep investors on tenterhooks. So, the best way to avoid the ongoing uncertainty and volatility in the market is to take a stock specific approach. Asian stocks fell this morning,

Asian stocks fell, driving the region's benchmark to a two-year low, on renewed concerns that credit-market turmoil will hurt bank profits and curtail global economic growth. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index lost 1.7% to 122.95 as of 10:57 a.m. in Tokyo, set for the lowest close since July 26, 2006. Financial companies were the biggest drag, accounting for more than a quarter of the benchmark index's retreat.

The Nikkei ended the morning session down 363.96 points at 12,801.49. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.6% in early minutes.

Asian stocks advanced for the first time in five days, led by industrial and materials companies, after analysts raised their ratings for Komatsu and Sumitomo Metal Industries.

Japan's Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 1.7% to 13,240.95. Benchmarks rose in most other Asian markets open for trading except China. Indonesia and the Philippines are closed for holidays.

Today, Indian Markets is expected to remain under pressure after inflation surged to 16-year high. Concerns have again re-surfaced that RBI may soon announce tightening measures in the near term. The dearth of any nearterm positive triggers coupled with lack of participation by FIIs would also keep the bulls on tenterhooks. For now, movement of crude oil prices and global markets would be closely watched.

For the day, we expect a cautious to weak start and a choppy day. A technical bounce back is not ruled out though after Thursday's steep losses. But, one should be careful in building fresh long positions.
