Asian stocks fell for a fifth day today,

Asian stocks fell for a fifth day today, set for the biggest weekly decline in a year, after rising US jobless claims deepened concern about economic growth and sparked a global sell-off.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index lost 2% to 116.84 at 11:15 a.m. in Tokyo. The index is headed for a 6.7% decline this week and its lowest since July 19, 2006.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped below 20,000-point level. The Hang Seng was last seen down 2.7% at 19,834. The Nikkei in Tokyo crumbled 2.5% to 12,238, while the Kospi in Seoul was down 1.1% at 1410 and the Straits Times in Singapore shed 1.9% to 2576.

The Shanghai Composite in China was down 2% at 2,231 and the Taiex in Taiwan slid 1.6% to 6309.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs6.03bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Thursday while local institutions pumped in Rs4.3bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers of Rs19.35bn. On Tuesday, FIIs were net buyers to the tune of Rs13.37bn in the cash segment. Mutual funds were also net buyers of Rs1.16bn on the same day.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today’s gap down opening is a good opportunity to buy only if you have the money and the ability to spot stocks which could bounce back soon. Just when things were looking up for our markets, we get yet another brutal sell-off on Wall Street. The Dow was down 3% and the Nasdaq slumped by 3.2%. And, this despite crude oil ending below the $108 per barrel mark.

For today, we expect another cautious start on the back of mixed cues coming in from the global markets. Indices across the globe are awaiting outcome of the Fed meet and its stance on interest rates. Also, ECB will meet this week to review the interest rates. The outcome of these meetings could provide the next trigger for the markets. Against this backdrop, we expect Indian market to consolidate around the current levels in the near term. Large-caps could again take a back-seat as action is likely to continue in second line stocks. Stock specific activity could again be the order of the day.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today,we expect the recent upward bias to continue in the short term, though weak global markets could lead to a cautious opening today. With the Indo-US nuclear deal moving ahead, the overall sentiment will remain positive. Thereafter, we might see the main indices shed some gains ahead of the outcome of the FOMC meet on Tuesday. Also, there could be some profit booking after a four-week rally.

We expect some cooling as global markets are not that supportive. The bias remains positive though, as FIIs were big buyers on Tuesday. Inflation numbers will be out today after the market closes. There is a likelihood of some more moderation as crude oil has cooled off considerably in the past few days. The Government will also come under pressure to reduce fuel prices if crude slips below $100.

Pri Market Commentary ...

The stock market game across the world has become quite simple these days. Global equity markets tend to climb if crude oil falls and vice versa. For a country like India which relies heavily on imports of crude, any sharp correction in oil prices is a big plus.

So, the overnight steep fall in oil prices due to the weakening of Hurricane Gustav coupled with relatively stable Asian markets could help the bulls extend Monday's late rally into today's trade, at least at start of the session. Thereafter, things may turn choppy as investors may not want to take a chance ahead of Wednesday's holiday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Asian Markets updates ... this morning

In Asian markets, the Nikkei in Tokyo ended the morning session up 63.11 points at 12,897.29. Resignation of Japan's Prime Minister had little effect on Tokyo stocks, as gains for automakers, financials and industrials led to a modest advance in key regional stock benchmarks.

The Hang Seng in Hong Kong was down 42 points or 0.2% at 20,864 while the Kospi in Seoul added 5 points or 0.3% to 1419. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index was up 48 points or almost 1% at 5166.

The Straits Times in Singapore was nearly unchanged at 2715 while the Shanghai Composite in China slid 29 points or 1.3% at 2295 and the Taiex in Taiwan slumped 117 points or 1.7% at 6695.

Asian stocks fell the most in almost two weeks, led by automakers and technology companies, on renewed concern that faltering US economic growth will hurt demand for the region's exports.

Japan's Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 1.3% to 12,909.97. Stock indexes also declined elsewhere in Asia and Australia. Malaysia and Vietnam are closed today for holidays.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today,we expect a gap-down opening on the bourses, given the extremely weak cues coming from international financial markets. Dow Jones fell overnight after its economy grew less than expected in the second quarter even as unemployment rose. Thursday’s rangebound movement indicates that the market is apprehensive over the near-term direction.

Aggressive buying should be avoided for a while. The undertone is still bearish. Rising interest rates, higher inflation and concern on the US economy remain the areas of concern.
