Inflation falls marginally to 12.40%

India's annual inflation dipped to 12.4 percent, as fuel and power costs moderated, the Ministry of Commerce reported Thursday.The wholesale price index, the nation's most-watched inflation indicator, fell to 12.4 percent for the week ending Aug. 16, down from 12.63 percent percent for the week before.

The Finance Minister early this morning launched the currency futures on the NSE.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs1.87bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Thursday. Local institutions were net buyers of Rs3.9bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net buyers of Rs199.7mn. On Wednesday, the foreign funds were net buyers of Rs2.8bn in the cash segment. Mutual Funds were net buyers of Rs14mn on the same day.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today,we expect the Indian market to stage a rebound today, as inflation for the week ended August 16 has declined marginally, to 12.4%. Even the global markets are depicting a rosy picture after the US economy expanded at a faster than estimated rate of 3.3% in the second quarter. Oil prices have dropped to around $116 a barrel. However, investors should not get carried away, as a sustained rally is unlikely till there is a significant improvement in local and global factors. Market participants should also watch out for India’s Q1 GDP numbers, which will set the tone for the day at least.

September Nifty futures contracts witnessed strong build up and the premium too increased. This indicates that traders are bit more positive on the new series. The 4200 put has seen healthy build up as well. So, this level could turn out to be the key one for the market's near-term direction. Rollovers in single stock futures have also been quite good at 85%. The stage may be set for another intermediate uptrend, if global cues remain positive and there are no blips on the macro-economic front either.

Today, we expect yet another cautious to higher opening on Dalal Street. Lack of positive triggers and uncertainty among the participants regarding the future course of market direction has made this month’s F&O expiry a tame affair. However, today being the last day of expiry of August contracts, heavyweights could swing sharply adding volatility to the market. Also, crude oil prices inching higher and inflation climbing further could add to the weakness. With first quarter GDP numbers to be released tomorrow, investors should remain on the sidelines.

Asian markets are trading mixed this morning. The Nikkei in Tokyo was down 14 points at 12,764 while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong climbed 163 points or 0.8% at 21,219. The Kospi in Seoul added 8 points to 1498 while the Straits Times in Singapore was nearly flat at 2709.

The Shanghai Composite in Shanghai was down 14 points at 2336 while the Taiex in Taiwan jumped 113 points to 7077.

Today, we expect the market to open flat. Thereon, it would continue to remain choppy with stock specific action. Lack of positive triggers and uncertainty ahead of the F&O expiry on Thursday would keep the bulls on the sidelines. The bulls managed to regain some lost ground yesterday. However, one should not get lured by this recovery. Lack of participation by the FIIs is making it tough to predict a clear direction.

Yesterday,the benchmark Sensex closed higher, erasing early morning losses led by recovery in ICICI Bank and Satyam Computers. However, RIL was the major laggard following reports that the company is planning to transfer 80% of its participatory interest in KG D6 block.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today,all the three main US indices were down nearly 2% each. Stock benchmarks also fell in key markets in Europe and Latin America. But, Asian markets haven't fallen as much as their western counterparts. Crude oil is only marginally higher at around $115 per barrel. So, there is still hope for the bulls that things might improve as the day wears on. Expect a lot of stock centric action with Infosys likely to hog the limelight in the wake of its big-bang acquisition.
Infosys announced the country's biggest ever acquisition in the IT space. The Bangalore-based software major has acquired UK-based SAP consulting firm Axon for $753mn or Rs33bn. At almost 20% premium to Friday's closing price of Axon and two times sales, the all-cash deal is not cheap. Its operating margin, at 15% is nearly half of Infosys. But, in the long run, it is expected to boost the company's business in the UK and Europe.There’s a lot more to the market than Infosys. A deal of this size may save the stock for some time but not the sentiment on the sector. Overall, we may witness more weakness today, at least in opening trades on the back of the overnight fall in US shares.

FIIs Movement ..

FIIs were net sellers of Rs2.39bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Friday. Local institutions were net buyers of Rs4.5bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers of Rs5.94bn. On Thursday, the FIIs were net sellers of Rs2.78bn in the cash segment. Mutual Funds were net sellers of Rs975mn.

Asian stocks were up smartly this morning,

Asian stocks were up smartly this morning, helping the region's benchmark index rebound from a two-year low, after oil slumped and on speculation that a possible investment in Lehman Brothers will ease concerns over credit losses.

The Nikkei in Tokyo was last up 1.8% while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong jumped by nearly 3%. The Shanghai Composite in China gained 1.25% while the Kospi in Seoul rose 0.6%. The Straits Times in Singapore was up 1% while the Taiex in Taiwan advanced 1.4%.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, we expect the market to extend Friday's late rebound, purely on the basis of a global rally. Crude oil, which surged above $121 per barrel on Aug. 21, has slid back to $114 levels. The bulls may end on a high note today, and perhaps during the week if oil doesn't rebound again.

We will have the F&O expiry on Thursday. The rollovers have been quite low, reinforcing the view that neither the bulls nor the bears are willing to carry forward their positions into September. So, no major upheavals are expected on the derivative side of the market.
