Asian stocks this morning have tumbled to the lowest in three years. European shares ended Wednesday with big losses for the third straight session. In Russia, the regulators halted stock market trading for a second straight day on Wednesday.

Today,we expect another weak opening for the Indian stocks amid the worldwide gloom. Any possibility of a rally will hinge on a recovery in global markets, even though the Prime Minister has expressed confidence in the Indian economy yet again. Of course, the inflation guessing may again cause some last half an hour swings.

After a day of relief, US stocks got pounded again on Wednesday, as investors feared that the ongoing financial turbulence might lead to more government bailouts and further consolidation among desperate banks and securities firms.
Confidence in the global economy has been shaken as the financial turmoil in the US worsens. Risk aversion has increased. No market or asset class is being spared, as investors' confidence is at an all-time low and plunging further.

Today,looks like we are set for another bad day, given the excess of negative factors from the US financial system. Indian market could well see a meltdown, after key indices closed below their crucial support levels. Crude prices have softened further. However, no positive impact is likely because the interpretation now is that falling crude prices mean lack of demand, which in turn indicates an economic slowdown.

We recommend staying away from the market for some time. Intermittent bounces are a given in these conditions. Those are just opportunities to lighten existing positions.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, bulls chose to overlook positive news such as the correction in crude oil prices, moderation in inflation and improved IIP numbers for July 2008. IT stocks fell sharply following reports that Infosys' Q2 results may be hurt due to a rise in US$ against the European currencies.

Most factors point towards a negative opening today. Crude falling below US$100 ideally should be music to the ears of bulls. However, the situation has worsened with the recent news flow in the global financial markets, especially after potential rescue buyers for Lehman Bros walked away. With more speculation emerging about financial troubles in few other global banks, the mood is pessimistic than ever before.

After a lower opening, the usual short-term pullback may be seen. However, no aggressive buying should be undertaken till there is some stability in the global markets.
