Pri Market Commentary ..

Today,we expect another day of wild swings with a negative bias as the bloodletting continues across global markets. The main focus of Indian market would be on the mid-term review of the monetary policy by the RBI. The central bank may not tinker with policy rates or the CRR/SLR given the fact that it has (along with the Government) already taken extraordinary steps to shore up liquidity in the local markets. These measures take time to work their way through the economy.


It is quite likely that the RBI Governor Duvvuri Subbarao and his colleagues at Mint Street will keep rates and CRR steady for now. Anyways, in the current unprecedented environment, the regulators are not waiting for scheduled meetings for making their moves. So, don’t be surprised if the RBI doesn't do anything today. But expect some more easing in interest rates and CRR over the next weeks if inflation continues to moderate. On the whole, we see a weak opening and another volatile day.

Pri Market Commentary ..

We are likely to witness an opening carnage today on the back of another round of vicious sell-off across global markets. Stock markets across the globe have taken a severe beating amid mounting fears of a world-wide recession. Even the commodities have not been spared, with oil prices plumbing to a 16-month low, gold slipping to one-year low and a key commodities index hitting a four-year nadir. The yen is gaining ground against the dollar and euro, suggesting a reversal in the so-called carry trades.


The easing of ECB norms and the crash in crude prices should have brought cheer. Alas, we remain at the mercy of global markets which promise new lows for our indices today. Investors, who have been waiting with cash can look to make some deployment today. And don't forget to get back to cash during a bounce back in the coming days.

Marc Faber -Investment Guru said that first, we'll get a bounce from oversold levels and after that we will drift because the global economy is slowing down at an unprecented pace and the governments in the western world will try to reignite credit growth. However, he feels that they will fail. He further said that Asia is the producer for the US and it is also the region that has very large capital spending.

So, when there is a slowdown in the US, it's not good for the US but it's a disaster for Asia and an even greater disaster for the resource producers of the world. Kirby Daley, Senior Strategist at Newedge Group said that what the capitulation caused and what was causing the issues with policy makers was feeding complacency. So, complacency in the equity markets was causing complacency for the policy makers especially for Bernanke and Paulson to try ad-hoc measures. The capitulation caused the world to wake up and act in concert to get to the heart of the problem.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, we expect the Indian market to open lower, as the two-day rally has largely been on account of short covering. The wide section of the market still lacks confidence to make a full-fledged return. The bulls may have expected to soar like the Chandrayaan - the name of India's unmanned spacecraft to moon, which successfully took off this morning. However, the gravity of the situation is such that after two days of solid gains, things are likely to cool down a little.

Nothing earth shaking has happened though. US stocks slid overnight as mixed corporate earnings offset the continuing softening in global inter-bank lending rates. European shares too ended lower amid growing pessimism towards earnings growth, notwithstanding the thaw in world credit markets for a third straight day. Markets in Asia have also opened on a soft note.

Given the persistent uncertainty over the impact of the credit crisis on the global economy and weak macro-economic factors we will continue to advocate caution. We have miles to go before the smiles can come back.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs8.17bn

FIIs were net sellers of Rs8.17bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Monday while the local institutions poured in Rs2.16bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net buyers at Rs4.77bn. On Friday, FIIs were net sellers of Rs8.67bn in the cash segment, taking their total outflows this year to above $11.7bn.

Today,we can see another firm opening and perhaps back-to-back days of rallies, buoyed by the surprisingly dovish move by the RBI and the overnight bounce in US. In addition, the rates in the crucial inter-bank market overseas has started softening, which could be a sign that the credit crunch is easing. The situation in the local money market too has improved considerably on the back of the aggressive CRR reduction and now the 100 bps cut in the repo rate.
Stick to the frontline stocks and lock in gains at higher levels. Keep some cash handy to take advantage when the market eases further. Wait for a clear signal of stability from the market before stepping up the shopping spree.
