Shares of Bharti Airtel slipped 1% to Rs814. The company posted a net profit of Rs26.48bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 as compared to Rs21.67bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2008. Thereby registering a growth of 22% YoY. Total Income has increased from Rs85.68bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2008 to Rs104.49bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2009.
ITC
Shares of ITC surged by over 5.5% to end at Rs230 after posting impressive quarterly numbers. The company posted a profit after tax of Rs8.78bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 as compared to Rs7.48bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2008. Thereby posting a rise of 17% YoY. Total income increased from Rs40.14bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2008 to Rs42.20bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2009.
Pre Market Commentary ...
Earnings so far have been better than expectations, both in India and overseas. The prospects for monsoon, which have been fluctuating, also appear to have brightened. FIIs have resumed their shopping spree after a short-lived lull. Those who went short after the budget are eating humble pie now. The primary market too is gradually beginning to claw its way back. India Inc. has been able to generate good bit of interest among investors through QIPs and GDRs.
Emerging market equity funds drew $2.6bn in the week ended July 22, the most since the period ended June 10. The VIX is back under 30, suggesting that investors are confident. But it remains above 20, a sign that investors are not overly exuberant.
Not all news is good though. Microsoft, American Express and Amazon.com’s earnings have missed Wall Street estimates. After briefly crossing the 20K mark, the Hang Seng slipped into red this morning. It is trading marginally up as of now.

BHEL posted Q1 net profit of Rs4.71bn up 22.6% as against Rs3.84bn in the same period last year. Total income increased from Rs46.2bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2008 to Rs58.9bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2009.
The stock ended lower by 3% to Rs2150 it opened at Rs2220 and made an intra-day high of Rs2247 and a low of Rs2126. Total traded volumes stood at 3.3mn shares.

Market Commentary ...
Today after a flat start, the indices will swing mostly to global cues. A recovery may be always on the cards but avoid getting in stocks which appear ripe after the recent run. The dangerous mid-caps may be back on the shopping list even though the risk-reward ratio remains lower for now.
It was darkness after dawn as a thick cloud cover over India and China hid the sun when the eclipse began. The market too had its share of darkness and choppiness. The outlook remains hazy as investors search new reasons to justify their stand on equity investment.
Asian markets are mixed just like the US indices. The Nasdaq managed to close in the green for the 11th straight session as Apple's profits nourished the bulls. But Boeing descended and Coca-Cola's profits lost its fizz. The Dow closed in the red while S&P 500 was flat.
Nouriel Roubini, who’s claim to fame is for predicting the current collapse, said the economy is turning a corner although he believes the recession is still far from over. Now whatever that means, back home in India, the results have been mostly on par or above expectations barring a few cement companies. Disinvestment (the buzzword for the bulls) may see action in mid-August as around 15 PSUs have been asked to give IPO feasibility report. On the flip side, a rise in refund payout has hurt the Centre’s net direct tax collections growth rate for the first quarter this fiscal.

TCS shot up by over 15% to end at Rs500
Shares of TCS shot up by over 15% to end at Rs500 on Monday registering its biggest single day gains for the first time since the stock was listed on the exchanges in August 2004. During the intra-day trades market capitalization of TCS hit the 1 lakh crore mark.
The stock rallied after the company posted spectacular Q1 earnings beating market estimates with major brokerage firms upgrading the stock rating.
The stock had opened at Rs449 and made an intra-day high of Rs514 and a low of Rs449. Total traded volumes stood at 3.9mn shares on the BSE.
Maytas Infra were locked at 5% upper circuit
Shares of Maytas Infra were locked at 5% upper circuit to Rs71.15 after reports stated that the government will consider a strategic sale of Maytas Infra, if the board makes a recommendation. The stock opened at Rs71.15 and made an intra-day high of Rs71.15 and a low of Rs71.15. Total traded volumes stood at 80,000 shares on BSE.

FIIs were net buyers of Rs5.63bn in the cash segment on Monday on a provisional basis while the local funds were a bit more cautious, putting in Rs1.52bn, according to figures published on the NSE web site. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net buyers at Rs2.34bn.
On Friday, the foreign funds were net buyers in the cash segment at Rs2.6bn, as per SEBI data. With this, their net investment in Indian stocks this year has crossed Rs300bn or ($6bn). Mutual Funds were net buyers of Rs7.42bn in the cash segment on Friday.
