Asian stocks fell, led by financial companies,

Asian stocks fell, led by financial companies, after condominium builder Urban Corp. filed for bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch said the credit crisis isn't over. Commodity producers gained after oil and metal prices rose.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average in Tokyo ended the morning session down 39.16 points or 0.3% at 12,983.89. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down 33 points or 0.2% at 21,259.

The Kospi in Seoul, the Straits Times in Singapore and the Taiex in Taiwan were nearly unchanged. The Shanghai Composite index in China was down 18 points or 0.7% at 2428.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, the much-hyped SEBI meet turned out to be a no-show as it decided not to change its policy on P-Notes. In the medium-to-long term, the market may not be able to rise sharply as FIIs may continue their selling spree. Also, the Government has trimmed its forecast for GDP growth in FY09 to 7.7%. It also expects inflation to shoot up to 13% shortly before it softens. With no major positive triggers on the horizon, the Indian market will look to global cues and movement in crude oil prices. Looking at the trend of the last few trading sessions, we expect a nervous opening in the market today. The market may attempt to recover later in the day. Inflation numbers will be announced after the market hours, and they are expected to rise marginally from 12.01%.

Asian stocks dropped, sending the region's benchmark index to a two-year low, after Japan's economy contracted and companies reported weaker profit growth. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped 1.3% to 126.18 as of 11:20 a.m. in Tokyo, the lowest level since September 2006.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs6.87bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Tuesday and the local funds offloaded shares worth Rs76.5mn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers of Rs8.64bn. Beijing Olympics Gold Medal At the 2008 Beijing Olympics,

Abhinav Bindra won the gold for the Men's 10m Air Rifle final after shooting a total of 700.5, thus becoming the first Indian individual gold medallist ever at the Olympics. He scored 596 (fourth) in the qualifying round and out-scored all other shooters in the finals with a round of 104.5. This was India's first individual gold medal at the Olympics, and the first gold in 28 years, since the Men's Hockey team won the gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, we expect a spillover of healthy cues from the global markets on Indian bourses at least for most part of the day. US market rallied on Friday. The dollar's biggest advance against the euro in almost eight years pushed crude oil prices lower to US$115/bbl mark. The bulls would certainly hope for some stability after a volatile week.

We expect the interest-rate sensitive stocks to lead the rally. Banking, realty and oil marketing companies are likely to be the beneficiaries following events over the weekend. However, in the near term much will depend on the outcome of IIP numbers on Tuesday and SEBI’s meeting to review FII regulations on Wednesday.

Stocks to watch out: ONGC, Aptech, Kotak Bank and L&T.
