Infosys have come up with Q2FY09 numbers, which are above expectations. Infosys Q2FY09 net profit stood at Rs 1432 crore Vs Rs 1302 crore (QoQ), up 10%.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs10.55bn (provisional) in the cash segment

FIIs were net sellers of Rs10.55bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Wednesday while the local institutions pumped in Rs10.83bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers at Rs2.05bn. On Tuesday, the FIIs were net sellers of Rs5.48bn in the cash segment. Mutual Funds pulled out Rs3.07bn on the same day.

Today, given the relentless sell-off across global markets, particularly in the US and Asia, we expect another gap-down opening. Things could get worse, especially if there is no improvement in markets in Asia and Europe. There are fears that our market may come closer to the lower circuit levels.

Today is also an important day from the quarterly earnings' point of view, as IT major Infosys has announced its results for the July-September quarter. The company has reported a net profit of Rs14.32bn, up 10% over the previous quarter. Revenue for the July-September quarter stood at Rs54.18bn, up 11.6% over the first quarter. Meanwhile, the rupee has hit an all-time low of 49.30 per dollar.We continue to advise caution at this stage.

Today, we expect another weak opening in the face of the sharp cuts across global markets. Lower level buying may set it in. Given Infosys’ results on Friday and other global developments which one has to contend with, it is prudent to avoid carrying any positions.

The war between the bulls and the bears seems to be one-sided for long. Nine nights of Navratri is set to culminate but there are no signs of survival, forget victory for the bulls. Indian financial markets are closed tomorrow on account of Vijaydashami, also known as Dussehra. It is considered an auspicious day to begin new ventures in life. Given the suffering most market players have undergone, one can only pray that things get better on a personal level. Conquer your fear and avoid the temptation of overcoming your losses in a hurry.

Asian stocks fell for a third day,

Asian stocks fell for a third day, led by financial companies, as the global credit crisis deepened in Europe and the US lost the most jobs in five years. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 1.9% to 102.68 as of 9:50 a.m. in Tokyo. Last week, the regional stock benchmark posted the biggest weekly drop since August 2007 on concern that the US bank bailout will fail to stimulate demand for the region's exports.

Japan's Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 2.8% to 10,636.18 while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was down 2.5% at 17,236. The Kospi in Seoul was down 4.3% at 1359 while the Straits Times in Singapore dropped 2.7% to 2234. The Shanghai Composite in China - resuming trade after a week-long holiday - fell 3.1% to 2222. The Taiex in Taiwan shed 3.4% at 5549 and the S&P/ASX 200 index in Sydney was down 3.4% at 4536.

Pri Market Commentary ..

Today, we expect the market to open on a weak note yet again given the sharp losses in Asian markets, which are down 3-4%. For the day, the key indices movement will hinge on the outcome of today's SEBI meeting. It is not clear whether the announcement from the market watchdog will be during or after market hours. We would continue to advise caution at this juncture, though valuations are quite compelling. Look at some shopping at lower levels. Remember, that beyond the mountains, there are mountains again. So, keep some cash handy, as there is no guarantee that we have hit a bottom.

Today, the clearance of the Indo-US nuclear deal is a positive for Indian market and the Senate acceptance of the bailout package also translates into some hope. However, the bailout still needs clearance from the US House of Representatives, which had rejected it earlier on Monday. So worries and uncertain times continue to linger over the global financial markets.

The Dow Jones fell sharply overnight as weak economic reports contributed nervousness ahead of the House vote on the US$700bn bank rescue plan later on Friday. A positive outcome will help in restoring confidence in the financial markets. Until that happens, one must remain careful and keep a close watch on developments underway in the US.
