Asian markets this morning are also up sharply.

Asian markets this morning are up sharply. The bad news is that crude oil has gained over $5 to cross $128 per barrel. Also, the weekly inflation number will continue to cast its spell on the market. In a related development, RBI Governor YV Reddy has hinted that the central bank may go for another round of monetary tightening to contain inflation. And, there's speculation that the RBI may even tinker with policy rates to anchor inflationary expectations.

Today,we expect market to open in a subdued note but a pull back thereafter can be expected. Due to negative factors, we expect the market to remain under pressure in the near-term. There are more chances of it falling than rallying from here. Technical and F&O indicators too are negative. FII selling has accelerated in the past few days. So, the bulls appear to be cornered from all fronts. Amidst extreme pessimism, a minor pull-back is not ruled out. But, any rally should be looked at a chance to lighten positions.

This is a break up considering crude oil at 130 $ per barrel. Following details are for per liter petrol in Rs.

Basic Price = 21.93

Excise duty = 14.35

Education Tax = 00.43

Dealer commission = 01.05

VAT = 05.50

Crude Oil Custom duty = 01.10

Petrol Custom = 01.54

Transportation Charge = 06.00

Total price = Rs 51.90


So for a Rs 22 liter petrol at pumps we people pay Rs 28 tax extra.

If Central Govt. wish, it can still reduce the price of petrol in the current crisis situation, but it doesn't intend to do so, instead trying to fool the people and Nation. This is the basis LEFT parties are opposing, just generating more profits for the oil marketing companies.

Today,we expect the ongoing weakness to continue in the market though value buying at lower levels could bring indices in the green.The near term uncertainty is likely to prevail. While inflation is at record highs, crude has managed to cool a bit to around US$124 levels.Continuous selling by the FIIs is another cause of concern.

Today, any major fuel price hike at cabinet's meeting could provide an immediate trigger. However, a marginal increase is already factored in. Globally,fresh worries have emerged again after Lehman Brothers in US fell to its lowest level since August 2003 on concerns that it may report its first ever quarterly loss.

Pri Market Commentry ...

Today, we expect our market to extend yesterday's selloff, given the plethora of negative factors, both local and global. Also, technical and F&O indicators are far from positive, and signal more pain in the immediate future. Select buying may always take place at lower levels. Review your financial comfort before adding stocks. Remain cautious at this juncture as the undertone has suddenly taken a reverse swing.

FIIs continue to be net sellers. Supporting the market at this juncture is not on anyone’s agenda. 4800 was seen as a big support for the Nifty. But, that level was breached quite easily yesterday. The put-call ratio of option contracts expiring in June is also indicating further slide. Nifty futures continues to trade at a discount to the spot index and saw addition in its open interest, suggesting fresh build up in short positions. It remains to be seen if these shorts will get covered over the next few days or will there be further increase.

Given this backdrop, one has no choice but to stay on the sidelines before there is more clarity on the market's direction.

Pri Market Commentry ...

Today, we expect the market to open on a cautious to flat note as most global markets are sluggish. Thereafter, the trend will turn sideways and rangebound. With the GDP data out of the way, the focus will be on crude oil prices and whether the Government manages to bite the bullet and increase retail fuel prices.

Of course, ground reality remains that rising inflation is reducing the weight of wallets across the board. Inflation has the potential to touch double-digits in a few week's time. If inflation does spiral out of control, the RBI will have no choice but to resort to some tightening measures. The RBI may even hike the repo rate, which may not please India Inc and the bulls.
