Today,we expect the key indices to pull back after Thursday’s fall. The US market erased losses and turned higher late in the session on reports that the Obama regime was preparing a plan to subsidize mortgages of troubled home owners. European indices fell for a third straight day on Thursday. The good thing for India is that most Asian markets are up smartly this morning.
However, the overall mood still remains glum and any advance is unlikely to sustain for long. For now ride the Popular Express but don’t forget to get off when you reach your destination.Populist measures may be signaled off today with the interim railway budget doling out some stuff to keep voters on track. At the same time, the Government will incorporate further stimulus measures to accelerate economic growth during the vote-on-account on Monday. There may be some sops for sectors like Housing, Infra, IT, Auto and export-centric industries. Some tinkering with indirect taxes may also be on the cards to bolster spending. As a result, the market may turn a little higher after this week’s setback.

Today,we expect a steep fall in opening trades as bulls yield to the global trend. A pull-back to positive zone seems less likely.Well, the much-awaited Washington events are finally out of the way. The new bank bailout plan and the passing of the stimulus bill in the Senate were not received too well by Wall Street. US indices slumped over 4% each with the S&P 500 bearing the brunt of the sell-off.

European shares ended 2-3% down. Asian markets, barring the Hang Seng, are relatively better off this morning.Any hope could come on expectations that the Government may announce further stimulus measures in Monday’s interim budget. Top government officials are hinting at sector-centric sops in the vote-on-account. And if media reports are anything to go by, Real Estate, Auto and IT sectors are likely to be major beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the IIP data for December is likely to be better than the past couple of months. Inflation may also soften a bit further.
We see the key indices losing recent momentum and turn sideways again, even if the Government announces more stimulus measures.A lot would depend upon the Obama administration’s stimulus package.


Also being eagerly awaited is the unveiling of a revamped bank rescue plan. Both the key events would take place later today in the US. So, the global cues would be playing an important role in dictating the trend atleast in the opening trades.

Today, the market could extend the two-day rally, at least at the start today. Thereafter, we expect the key indices to remain a bit subdued. What may also keep the overall mood cheerful are expectations of fresh stimulus measures in the interim budget.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on Washington. Global markets are awaiting the passage of Obama administration’s stimulus package. Also being eagerly awaited is the unveiling of a revamped bank rescue plan. Both the key events will take place later today in the US. So, the Asian markets will be able to react to the same only on Wednesday.

The moot point is whether global markets can sustain the bounce once the expected events are out of the way. The jury’s still out on this. The best thing would be to play for a short-term spurt and make a quick exit. It’s easier said than done, but nothing wrong in giving it a shot.

Today, the bulls would most likely extend Friday’s gains on firm global trend. A positive opening on Monday is more than a welcome sign. The next few days and perhaps weeks will see hectic action. A number of key events are lined up, both locally as well as globally. The Congress and the BJP have kicked off the campaigns for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The Government is also busy preparing the vote-on-account, which may include fresh measures to stimulate the economy. According to a business news channel, the Government is set to announce FY09 GDP data today. The IIP data for December will be out on Thursday. The barometer for the manufacturing sector should stay in the positive zone for the second month after dipping in the red in October. The US Senate is set to vote on Obama regime’s new stimulus plan on Tuesday. A revamped bank rescue package is also slated for the same day.
Global equities could rally if these two events pass off without much trouble. However, one should not get carried away with any big advance. It would be prudent to sell into any rally. The earnings season is yet to wind up in the US and rest of the world. Any negative surprise could spook the sentiment.
