Today, we expect yet another weak opening today. There may be some technical bounce. But, stay light for the weekend and come back to pick up few goodies at lower prices next week.


Last week, there was some relief for global equities. This week too started on a promising note. But, the past couple of days have seen resumption of a savage worldwide sell-off, that is threatening to take indices to new lows. It is really tough to make any prediction on the movement of the stock indices, as volatility has increased. This morning's trade in Asian markets is a case in point, with key indices witnessing wild swings.

Even the most adventurous are being inconvenienced by the wild swings in the market. Another day and another round of bloodbath in stocks across the globe! The story is all-too familiar by now, and could even be getting a bit monotonous. The writing is on the wall is that we are staring at a global recession. The major worry is how long and severe it will be? Nations across the world have been doing their best to limit the fallout from the unprecedented financial crisis. Those efforts still continue, with central banks cutting rates aggressively to boost lending and pump-prime the contracting economies.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs5.1bn (provisional) in the cash segment on Thursday while local institutions pumped in Rs3.5bn. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers at nearly Rs12bn. On Wednesday, FIIs were net buyers of Rs3.39mn in the cash segment.

Sugar stocks were in demand after government said that mills will be allowed to export without its prior approval from the government till the end of this year.

"The government has decided to extend the allowance of not requiring release orders for exports under the open general license up to Dec. 31, 2008, or till further orders," the food ministry said in a notification on its Web site.

Sugar exports have come to almost a standstill, S.L. Jain, director general of the Indian Sugar Mills Association, said last month.

Production may drop to 20mn tons in the year ending September 2009, lower than the August forecast of 22mn tons, he said.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, we expect another weak opening on the back of the global meltdown. From there on, the trend may turn choppy and will hinge on news flow. Given the bleak economic background, both globally and locally, stocks are unlikely to rise too much from current levels. There may be some more room on the upside, but there will be selling after every spurt. A sudden and sharp sell-off like Wednesday is not ruled out.

All said and done, Obama has won. The fact of the matter remains, investors and traders are in the market to make some bucks. That doesn’t seem to come easy for quite some time. Looks like the world markets are following the Indian market, as most global equity benchmarks tumbled on Wednesday amid mounting worries over the fast spreading economic gloom.

The main US indices are down over 5% each as a couple of grim economic reports took some shin off Barack Obama's historic win in the presidential election. Asian markets are down 5-6% this morning, with Shanghai stocks falling to the lowest level since September 2006. One exception was Europe, where the fall was relatively less (2-3%) than in other markets.

Take a break and wait for lower levels to resume your buying.

Today, for Indian market there could be some cooling, if not today than over the next few days, after the recent bounce back. Remain guarded even though the ongoing rally may prompt some to reckon that the worst is over.

Even as the bulls are enjoying their winning streak, it’s more than a dream come true for Democratic Senator Barak Obama. The American public are just about to finish voting for a new president, and indications show a clear lead for Obama over his Republican rival John McCain. It's not as if Obama is a magician who will remove all the pain. The fact that the uncertainty over the US presidential election will soon be over seems to have bolstered the sentiment across the globe.

On Tuesday, we wondered how long the current rebound in global stocks last given the weak economic outlook? Well, for the time being the bulls are all set to continue the momentum even today. Today, Labh Pacham - the final festival during the Diwali period is Labh Pancham on Kartik Sud 5. It is also known as 'Laakheni Panchmi' and 'Saubhaagya Panchmi.'

Those who have not performed Sharda Pujan or Lakshmi Puja on Diwali, perform pujan of their new ledgers today and ritually open their shops and businesses. In the days following Diwali including today, people visit friends and relatives, to renew solidarity. Sweets and other items are offered to guests, symbolically 'sweetening' relations.

'Labh' means benefit. People today usually wish for material 'labh' such as: a good job, good in-laws, riches and so forth. Yet the scriptures and sadhus inform us that the greatest 'labh' is human birth itself. With this one should endeavor for God-realization. The scriptures define 'labh' as - "Laabhasteshaam jayasteshaam kutasteshaam paraajayaha, Yeshaam indeevarashyaam hrudayastho janaardanaha.", meaning He is the true beneficiary and the truly victorious, who has installed the consort of Lakshmi, God, in his heart.

Diwali then, is a festival of inner enlightenment. Asian markets update: Hang Seng Index up 5.6%, Straits up 4.8%, Kospi Index up 2.3%.

Asian stocks gained for fifth straight trading session extending last week's rally, on speculation economic fallout from the global credit crisis can be contained.

The Hang Seng index slipped 751 points or 5.4% at 14,726. Shanghai Index was marginally up by 9 points or 0.2% at 1,729. The Nikkei 225 Index was closed.

However, the Taiwan Taiex index gained 101 points or 2.8% at 4,972, Straits Times was up 85 points or 4.7% at 1,878. While, Australia's S&P/ASX gained 119 points or 3% at 4,137.

Pri Market Commentary ...

Today, as the positive mood across global markets, the Indian bulls are unlikely to fall behind, though they already had a strong day in office on Friday. We expect yet another strong opening.

The RBI on Saturday cut the repo rate, CRR and SLR besides announcing several other measures to boost liquidity into the financial system. The move would force banks to lower the interest rates leading to higher credit growth.


The much-needed breath of fresh air comes in the wake of yet another busy week, where several other countries initiated liquidity injecting measures. Bank of Japan cut interest rate to 0.3% from 0.5%. Earlier, Fed slashed interest rate by 0.5%. Similar action was also seen in China last week. However, there is still widespread skepticism over the steps taken to unfreeze the credit markets as it will be a while before things start looking up on a sustained basis.
