Pre Market Commentary ...

Today, we may see a higher opening on the back of the late turnaround on Wall Street. Things were a bit mixed in Europe. Similar is the case for Asian markets this morning. Given that the market has been subdued for most of the week, there is a case for a technical or rather sentimental rebound. Overall, the trend is indecisive and sideways.The bulls seem to be gathering courage and saying that this is not the finish line but the pit stop - a la F1 style.

The bulls are taking a breather after a great run since early March. Fatigue appears to have set in after the main indices hit multi-month highs.The monthly jobs report to be issued in the US later today will be keenly followed. The US markets will enjoy an extended weekend due to the Labour Day holiday on Monday.The current insipid trend may continue until we get the next trigger(s) which could swing the market either way. Among the key catalysts will be the quarterly earnings and the half-yearly policy review by the RBI. The direction of fund flows will continue to have a bearing.

Pre Market Commentary ..

Today,the bulls will hope that the immersion, which symbolizes Ganesha’s return from the earth after removing obstacles, will hold true for the market. Sentiment suddenly appeared to be sinking in the recent past with concerns especially on the monsoon front. A flat start is in the offing for the market.

We expect stocks to remain lackluster and sideways in the near term without any specific bias. With most good news discounted, the market is now anxiously awaiting the next batch of positive triggers. At the same time, the poor monsoon has added to concerns that inflation will shoot up.In fact, CPI has already started inching up, with most indices at around 10-12%. Even the WPI inflation is expected to turn positive in the run up to festivals.

The Government and the RBI have their task clearly cut out. With stock valuations not cheap and uncertainty in global markets, the market will find it tough to make new highs.

Today, the promise of more glory for the bulls post 4700 levels on the Nifty has failed for now. The sell-off was mostly led by a slide in global markets. The China factor too continues to play spoilsport, though that market is bucking the global freefall today. Other Asian markets are in the red, taking their cues from overnight losses on Wall Street and Europe.Our market too is set to open lower, keeping in sync with the world.

Tuesday saw a turnaround and then a tumble, which came on higher volumes. The usual rumors of basket selling and some fund going bust did the rounds as the selling intensified.We also had disappointing reports on manufacturing PMI and exports. Monsoon has been weak and could have an adverse fallout on the overall economic activity. The Government is trying it best to keep the mood of the nation upbeat by projecting a rebound from the fourth quarter. The fact is growth is set to be lower than last fiscal, and a turnaround will be painfully slow. The market could turnaround faster!

Pre Market Commentary ..

Today, the world may be standing, sitting or sleeping but India sure is moving ahead. The Q1 GDP data revealed a resilient Indian economy. On a higher base and in the face of the global downturn, it was a commendable show. Given the trauma and turbulence the world economy has weathered, a GDP growth rate of 6% plus is acceptable. We expect a better opening on local bourses, as there is no China scare to haunt us today. Other Asian markets too are flashing the green light.One also has to note that Monday’s sell-off was led more by the FIIs, and was restricted to the large caps.

The broader market managed to hold its own. Today, the frontline counters may recover. As far as small- and mid-cap stocks are concerned, one should be careful in dealing with them. However, this space could still surprise on the positive side as these stocks had been under-performing the large caps lately.

In short, the outlook for today appears brighter, though overall things remain uncertain. Early gains may not sustain so one should be prepared for volatility at this juncture.

The Nikkei index was down 0.7% at 10,460 and Hang Seng index was down 2% at 19,690. While, Shanghai Composite fell by 5.3% at 2,706.

In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net sellers at Rs1.61bn. On Thursday, FIIs were net buyers at Rs13.43bn in the cash segment. Mutual Funds were net buyers of just Rs167mn on the same day.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Today, we are likely to toe the global line and open in the red, though there is no need to panic as such. A small pull-back is only to be expected after the recent advance. The Q1 GDP data will be out today and could swing the game either way. India sure is a force to reckon with Force One F1 powering ahead to finish second in the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday. But then China is something we cannot ignore. Despite perpetual optimism, the force may not be with the bulls at the start so to speak, as global markets are not doing well. A small pull-back is only to be expected after the recent advance.


The recent bugbear - the Chinese market could yet again play party pooper. The Shanghai Composite has sunk by as much as 5%. Other Asian indices too are down 0.5-2%. On Wall Street, the Dow broke its eight-session winning sequence on Friday. Despite the impending shortfall in farm output, the situation is not alarming as yet. The Finance Minister has reaffirmed that things are not so bad. One only hopes that the Centre manages the food supply situation well. Still, inflation is likely to present a few challenges down the line. If that happens, interest rates should also harden. One should brace for a few hiccups on the road to recovery.

The F&O rollover has been encouraging. It was the highest since February and much above the monthly average in recent history. However, other F&O indicators like the Put-Call ratio are pointing to some breather before the market kicks off another move up. The immediate resistance for the Nifty is placed at around 4800. The near-term support is seen at 4650-4680. Broadly, the index could swing between 4500 and 5000 in the next few weeks.

A factor that will play a crucial role in deciding the market's direction going ahead is fund flows and the mood of the overseas investors. This, in turn will hinge on how the situation shapes up on the local economic front and corporate results side. One will of course have to grapple with the daily developments across the global markets and economies as well.
