Today,we expect a cautious start, as Asian markets are mixed. Wall Street too failed to capitalise on the global advance. The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants to be safe. The market has come a long way since early March. But, the million-dollar question is where do we go from here?. We need to see a few quarters of strong growth, not just one quarter.

The sleeping bulls had some freedom to push up counters as they woke up to a feel-good factor, largely due to upbeat remarks by the Fed and data showing end of recession in Germany and France. Obstacles remain with mixed economic data in the US taking the sheen off the world-wide rally. US retail sales unexpectedly fell in July. The recovery in American labour and housing markets remains fragile.

Despite raining gains for a day as if the dam of liquidity overflowed, we have to grapple with an impending drought and all its attendant problems, especially inflation. Exports too remain a cause for concern. At the same time, the latest IIP data does promise betters prospects, as does the proposed new Direct Tax Code. Given this backdrop, stock valuations and liquidity flows will play crucial role in determining the market’s near-term direction.

Equity and commodity markets rallied, while emerging market and high yield currencies were in demand at the expense of the dollar and yen. The euro advanced against the dollar and the yen after the eurozone's two largest economies - Germany and France - reported surprise returns to growth in the second quarter. Crude oil prices rose above $71 per barrel while the sugar market extended its recent rally and base metals staged a broad advance as risk appetite strengthened.

FIIs turned net buyers at Rs6.31bn in the cash segment on Wednesday on a provisional basis while the local funds pumped in Rs1.83bn, according to figures published on the NSE's web site. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net buyers at Rs9.42bn. On Wednesday, the foreign funds were net sellers at Rs1.1bn in the cash segment. Their net purchases of Indian stocks have crossed $7.3bn year-to-date.

Today, after a flood of liquidity and news, there seems to be a drought of positive news flow. With most global markets flashing red signs, we expect a lower opening. The IIP data might bring some cheer though. On the whole, things will remain volatile and uncertain. The Fed is set to leave rates steady at near zero levels. What the Fed policymakers say will be keenly followed.

After having enjoyed the green shoots-led rally since early March, we may witness some drought in the form of slight softening in the market. Agri output is set to take a beating with the rain Gods not showering its blessings in several districts. The Centre has put the number at 161 districts. This will only aggravate the problems facing the UPA. Food prices are already hitting the roof. Given that festivals are round the corner and the low base effect too will start waning soon, tackling inflation will assume top priority.

Don’t be surprised if the Centre unleashes few more measures to reign in inflation. At the same time, it has the uphill task of bolstering growth. The global economic recovery is still fragile and with the monsoon shortfall it will take some doing to attain 6.5-7% GDP growth.

FIIs were net sellers of Rs6.4bn in the cash segment on Monday on a provisional basis while the local funds pumped in Rs861.4mn, according to figures published on the NSE's web site. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net buyers at Rs1.5bn. On Friday, the foreign funds were net sellers at Rs8.46bn in the cash segment. Their net purchases of Indian stocks have crossed $7.2bn year-to-date. Mutual Funds were net sellers at Rs2.76bn on Friday.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Today, we expect a flat to cautious opening as global cues are indecisive. There could be a slight rebound after the recent reversals. We remain cautiously optimistic and see a choppy yet range-bound market.

The hurt bulls understand that recovery comes in different shapes and sizes. Some expect it to be ‘V’ shaped; others reckon it will be ‘U’ shaped; there are a few who believe it will be a ‘W’ shaped turnaround. In summary, we are on track for a slow and steady recovery rather than a swift one. Locally, a below par monsoon will negate the positive effect of the stimulus measures. The panic over the outbreak of swine flu is avoidable though.

Globally, the Fed is likely to maintain its accommodative stance given the fragility of the US economy. It is expected to repeat the phrase that ‘recession is moderating’. Inflation comes secondary for most central banks, though it will start to spike from later this year.

For those who follow the Dow Theory, technical charts are throwing up bullish signals. Both the Dow and the Dow transportation index have topped their January highs. Still, many strategists are skeptical about any potential advance from this point.

As far as local stock indices are concerned, the Nifty levels to watch out for are 4400 on the downside and 4520 in the immediate future. It is reasonable for the market to take a breather after a sharp and strong advance like the one we have had since early March. One cannot expect a linear, one-way movement in key indices to last long. A little pause is normal and perhaps healthy.

Swine Flu Symptoms

According to the CDC, like seasonal flu, symptoms of swine flu infections can include:

• fever, which is usually high, but unlike seasonal flu, is sometimes absent
• cough
• runny nose or stuffy nose
• sore throat
• body aches
• headache
• chills
• fatigue or tiredness, which can be extreme
• diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes, but more commonly seen than with seasonal flu Signs of a more serious swine flu infection might include pneumonia and respiratory failure.

Market Commentary ..

We can barely handle a regular flu outbreak. As if the deficit monsoon was not enough, we now have to grapple with the growing concerns over swine flu. Though the situation has not yet reached alarm levels, it might have some effect on sentiment. More worrisome is the virtual disappearance of rains. Food prices are already pretty high and with the festival season approaching, it is likely to spike up further. A drought is the last thing that India needs at this crucial juncture.

Thankfully, the bulls got a dose of good news over the weekend in terms of stronger than expected US jobs data. This has come as a shot in the arm for the market, which is likely to overlook worries over swine flu and shortfall in monsoon. Among the key events to watch out this week would be the IIP numbers and comments from the Fed. We see the Nifty moving in a broad range of 4300-4800 in the near term. Ensure a healthy balance of your portfolio to stay immune from the vagaries of the market.
