Meanwhile, inflation is slowly making its way back, with WPI inflation climbing more than expected. Consumer prices are much higher. Inflation is considered bad for equities as it hurts consumer spending and erodes corporate profitability. But for an economy like India 4-5% inflation should not be a big issue. For the time being it may not have a major impact on market sentiment. This has the potential to make the market choppy but also gives you a chance to relax.

Pre Market Commentary ..
Today, we expect a slightly lower opening due to weak global cues. The usual wild swing associated with F&O expiry would be there. Overall, we maintain our cautiously optimistic stance. Some seem to be getting the perfect festival bonanza with Top IT companies doling out generous pay hikes and promotions. Last week, the Government had announced a hike in DA. The real estate industry has also resumed hiring. India Inc.’s fund raising binge continues. Bank lending has seen a pick up in Q2.
FIIs remain bullish on India and have pumped $10bn already. The demons over the aftereffects of drought have been pretty much exorcised. Globally too, things have improved quite a bit with the Dow nearing 10,000. Central banks are in no hurry to start reversing their extraordinary stimulus steps. Overall business-cum-investment sentiment is upbeat and risk appetite is back.
Among the concerns are with regard to inflation, though most central banks are willing to ignore it for a while. The other challenge will be to unwind the expansionary monetary and fiscal stimulus. Valuations too are not cheap, especially when promoters of large firms are selling.

Though the pace of their growth is slow, one shouldn’t be complaining too much when one looks at the situation a year ago. A big question is whether the ascent will continue or will it meet with any sort of resistance. The current bull-run is bound to be tested in the days, weeks and months ahead. Inflation will be the biggest challenge, along with hardening interest rates. Before the bad news starts trickling in, the market may get some good news in the form of another round of encouraging quarterly results.

Pre Market Commentary ...
Today, we expect a cautious start after an extended weekend. Things will be volatile given that we have the F&O expiry on Thursday. caution is going to be the mantra for the next few days as the market digests the recent spurt and awaits fresh good news. Global cues are mixed. The outcome of the two-day Fed meeting will be announced on Wednesday (US time of course). It’s a no-brainer that the Fed won’t tinker with rates. What could, however, have a bearing on the sentiment is what the FOMC says about the road ahead and the state of the US economy. Then there is the G20 Summit scheduled for this weekend.
All these events will make it tough for the key indices to build on last week’s gains. Though the overall mood is positive, the road ahead will be bumpy. The fact that we have already traveled so much since early March could bring in apprehensions. The results are just round the corner and expectations are on the positive side. Among the big risks will be inflation and its fallout on monetary policy. FIIs will continue to play a key role.
