Pri Market Commentary ...
Today, we expect some softening after last week’s stellar gains. The bulls and most investors may been happy with last week’s gains. For the month, US stock indices (except Nasdaq) had their worst January on record, with the Dow losing 8.8%. Back home though, the Sensex and the Nifty fell by 2-3% in January. Still, one should not allow complacency to set in, as the outlook remains bleak. Much of the fears, relating to the health of the western financial systems and its global ramifications are still in place. A raging debate is underway on whether a bad bank be created to take toxic debt from troubled banks. While US President Barack Obama seems to be in favour of the plan, others like Joseph Stiglitz bag to differ.
Obama’s much-hyped new stimulus is also facing stiff opposition from Republicans. Senate will take up the bill this week.Global markets will be on edge this week ahead of monthly US jobs data. No big events are due in India for the time being. Politics will dominate headlines over the next few months.Markets might drift lower in the coming week with the US economy contracting at the fastest pace in nearly three decades in the fourth quarter of last year sentiments continue to remain weak.

Pri Market Commentary ...
Given the uncertain backdrop and gloomy macro-economic scenario, we don’t see the Indian market making much headway in the near term. A sideways movement within a range of a few hundred points (on Nifty) appears more likely. There is no clear direction until we get fresh news-flow (bad or good) either locally or globally. Inflation data will be out later today, and a further slide in it is a given. However, it may not have a big impact on sentiment.

Pri Market Commentary ...
The US market suffered a big blow overnight amid pessimism about whether the Obama regime will be able to turn things around. Wall Street was shut on Monday when global markets were down. So, we hope that it was just playing catch up.
In Asia, most stock benchmarks have extended recent losses. It’s a no-brainer that Indian stocks will also fall today. One may think that the current sell-off is overdone, but unless the advanced economies stabilise, a sustained rebound is not possible. It’s going to be a long, hard road ahead.

Pri Market Commentary ...
Today, the market is expected to open on a weak note. The Nifty is likely to find some support near the 2780 levels. Global cues on Monday worsened the situation and the broader indices came tumbling down. Thank God the US markets were closed for President’s Day. Stocks in Europe, Asia and Latin America fell. Japan’s Nikkei is down 1.5% as it grapples with its worst economic crisis since the end of World War II. Britain was warned it faces the worst recession in almost three decades, the Group of Seven offered no solution to revive global growth and commodity prices sank.
It’s raining data on pledged shares. Dhoots, promoters of Videocon group have pledged 36.14% in Videocon Industries. United Breweries’ promoters have pledged 7.5% stake. Kingfisher Airlines’ promoters have pledged a 43.8% stake. Sound beats came in the form of desk thumping by the coalition members even as the market gave a thumbs down to the budget falling over 3%.
The outlook remain bleak for the moment, with the interim budget out of the way no markets lack triggers and also with the US markets to remain closed overnight, markets might remain choppy.

Pri Market Commentary ...
The government will present an interim budget today and use every opportunity to send a clear message to the voters. Whether it can literally afford to do it or not is a different question, for which there are no answers now.
A bias may be there towards job protection and job generation. While indirect tax rates may be changed there is less hope of tinkering with direct tax rates. Import duty hike in steel and excise cuts in cement and auto are on the wish list.
The market will salute a cut in STT (Securities Transaction Tax) if it happens. Let's hope for the best and we advocate to book profit on higher levels, better to have cash then wait for targets to achieve .
