Pre Market Commentary...

We expect a steady start today. Japan and South Korea have gained modestly while stock benchmarks in Europe rose marginally. Avoid taking any major call on either side. Use the uncertainty and consolidation to rejig your portfolio.

The uncertainness in recent times does not really offer much of a choice to take a chance. Brazil’s market is shut on account of the Carnival while a few Asian markets are closed for the Lunar New Year. For India and other world markets that are open for trading, there are hardly any reasons to celebrate - at least for the time being.

If anything, worries have got compounded of late. Concerns over China’s monetary tightening, debt troubles in the EU and the jobless economic recovery in the US are among the woes. Back home, while things appear to be getting better for the economy, inflation, at the same time, is threatening to cross double digits soon. Budget is just a few days away and could herald partial and calibrated rollback of the fiscal stimulus. Monsoon will be crucial, as India can hardly afford another bad rainy season.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Today, we expect a flat to slightly positive start for Indian markets with a likelihood of another short-covering-led bounce. Do not get carried away by any sudden spurt if any as the upside too could get capped sooner than later. In the near term, the Nifty could rise to the 5000 levels again; and perhaps cross 5000 before the Budget. On the whole, the market will remain volatile, largely owing to external factors and concerns over FII outflows. Outcome of the Budget will be another factor to determine near-term direction.

The market remains in a precarious situation. It is time to keep your heart, mind, eyes and ears open before taking a decision. The extended weekend brought mixed news. The industrial output data for December surpassed all optimistic estimates. China surprised by raising the reserve ratio for banks. Data also showed that Eurozone growth came to a halt in the last quarter of 2009. Among the other bad news was of course the blast in Pune just as India and Pakistan get ready to resume bilateral dialogue. On the M&A front, reports suggest that Kuwait-based Zain is said to have accepted a $10.7bn offer from Bharti Airtel for its African assets.

Buy Grasim TARGET 2900

The stock has been in strong uptrend after correcting from the peak of Rs2900 it touched during the month of December. The strong up moves has been backed by sharp surge in volumes. The momentum indicator like RSI and MACD are exhibiting positive divergence. The stock has managed to hold the key support levels on a closing basis despite the widespread volatility. We believe the cross above its critical resistance zone Rs2,710 on a closing basis may see rally extending to Rs2,900 and above. We recommend traders to buy the stock at current levels for a 2-3 weeks target of 2800 & 2900 with a strict stop loss placed at Rs2,640

On Monday, FIIs were net sellers of Rs8.06bn in the cash segment, while Mutual Funds were net buyers at Rs371mn, according to SEBI web site.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Today,we expect a positive start for Indian stocks on healthy global cues. But, don’t take undue risks, as the near-term outlook remains cloudy. A big worry is the continuous selling by FIIs, though local funds remain bullish. Budget could prove to be an important catalyst apart from of course the global events.

For now though, risk appetite seems to be back, at least temporarily. The dollar index slid below 80 and the euro had its biggest gain against the greenback in two months. Gold and crude oil also advanced. The Dow Jones had its biggest gain since Jan. 4. Stocks in Europe, however, missed out on much of the Greek-related rally. Asian markets are mostly higher.

Technically, the Nifty has short-term support at 4700 while resistance is likely at around 4900. It has to decisively surpass 4950 if it is to reclaim the coveted 5000 level. The Nifty has a strong support at 200 DMA i.e. 4640 in case of another major selloff. Meanwhile, Federal Reserve chairman Ben S. Bernanke is expected to release testimony on his vision for easing the US away from its current ultra-loose monetary policy. And while Bernanke may talk a lot about exit, he is going to make it clear that the central bank is also not in a hurry to take away the punching ball.

Pre Market Idea

Pre Market Commentary ..

Today we expect a flat opening due to indecisive global cues. The Dow Jones has closed below 10,000. Stocks in Europe finished higher. Asia is pretty much mixed.

We now have statistical evidence to substantiate that the green shoots in India have blossomed further. Apart from the subdued credit growth and tepid tax receipts (partly owing to fiscal stimulus) most other economic indicators have improved substantially.

The ball is now in the Finance Minister’s court. In that context, Feb. 26 will be a crucial day. Pranab Mukherjee is likely to take a calibrated approach to unwinding the fiscal stimulus. He has his task cut out on the fiscal front. So, we expect him to articulate strategy to return to the path of fiscal prudence. Any deviation from this will be disappointing.

Derivative indicators are pointing to further weakness. Technically, 4700 could give near-term support to the Nifty while resistance might kick in at 4800. The 200 DMA of 4640 will continue to be a crucial level to watch.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Today, brace for a gap-down opening as world markets are in a tizzy amid escalating concerns over the mounting debt problems in a few European nations. Whether the market manages to rebound remains to be seen as FIIs don’t seem to be in a mood to reverse their selling binge, at least for now.

Yesterday only we had warned against getting carried away with Wednesday’s rally. Unfortunately for the bulls, that prediction turned out to be a prophetic one. For those who heeded our advice though might have done better than most. Risk aversion has risen of late amid a spate of fresh worries from China’s tightening, to new restrictions for US banks to sovereign debt concerns in Europe.

For India, the big concern remains in the form of inflation and its ramifications on the stimulus-fueled recovery. The big event for India will be the Union Budget. Expectations are already building up. The Finance Minister has its task cut out with a yawning fiscal deficit staring him in the face. The 3G auction fiasco coupled with the lukewarm response to the NTPC FPO are only adding to his troubles. Some key support levels could melt amid the world-wide crash. Nifty futures trading in Singapore are down over 2% as of now. The Nifty could find support at 4740-4750. If there is no improvement in Asian markets, it could even fall below 4700. If the market rebounds, which could be either today or next week, the Nifty is likely to meet resistance at around 4900.
