TCS shot up by over 15% to end at Rs500

Shares of TCS shot up by over 15% to end at Rs500 on Monday registering its biggest single day gains for the first time since the stock was listed on the exchanges in August 2004. During the intra-day trades market capitalization of TCS hit the 1 lakh crore mark.

The stock rallied after the company posted spectacular Q1 earnings beating market estimates with major brokerage firms upgrading the stock rating.

The stock had opened at Rs449 and made an intra-day high of Rs514 and a low of Rs449. Total traded volumes stood at 3.9mn shares on the BSE.

Maytas Infra were locked at 5% upper circuit

Shares of Maytas Infra were locked at 5% upper circuit to Rs71.15 after reports stated that the government will consider a strategic sale of Maytas Infra, if the board makes a recommendation. The stock opened at Rs71.15 and made an intra-day high of Rs71.15 and a low of Rs71.15. Total traded volumes stood at 80,000 shares on BSE.

FIIs & DII movements..

FIIs were net buyers of Rs5.63bn in the cash segment on Monday on a provisional basis while the local funds were a bit more cautious, putting in Rs1.52bn, according to figures published on the NSE web site. In the F&O segment, the foreign funds were net buyers at Rs2.34bn.

On Friday, the foreign funds were net buyers in the cash segment at Rs2.6bn, as per SEBI data. With this, their net investment in Indian stocks this year has crossed Rs300bn or ($6bn). Mutual Funds were net buyers of Rs7.42bn in the cash segment on Friday.

Today, we expect a cautious start and some profit booking. The bulls have had their place in the sun even as monsoon, moon, sun and stars seem to be hogging the headlines. Monday was the 40th anniversary of the first ever manned moon mission. Meanwhile, the longest full solar eclipse this century will pass over India and China on Wednesday.

Coming to the markets, the fortunes continue to fluctuate depending on whether one is a bull or a bear. Right now, the bulls seem to be holding an upper hand. And, the Finance Minister could be having a quiet smirk now that the Sensex has erased all the post-budget losses. What’s more, the key indices are within striking distance of the highs hit in June.

Milestones may be crossed and new ones will be made. But, valuations have zoomed from the lows struck last year. Sooner or later this factor will put a lid on any unbridled rally, as fundamentals are yet to return to pre-recession levels. The market will remain volatile till news turns ‘good’ on a sustained basis.

Global equity markets appear to be clawing their way back after a brief period of consolidation. The catalyst(s) are not new - a few positive economic reports and better corporate earnings. The big question is whether this momentum can be carried forward? If yes, then for how long? We are bound to meet roadblocks along the way. The moot point is that the market is delicately poised, and is only reacting to daily dose of news (both local and global).

For every good news there is a bad news. It depends on what you choose to focus on. This makes the market vulnerable to wild fluctuations. But, the swings continue to baffle and bamboozle even the smartest of market pundits and traders. The best thing to do would be to act judiciously whether you are buying or selling, as the market could remain choppy for quite a while.

Today, the bulls could remain powerful, as global cues are strong and there have not been too many nasty surprises from India Inc till now. The key indices are likely to open higher, though they might not be able to sustain the advance. Bulls are getting bolder and power is the buzz word right now, be it the Government trying to accelerate the pace of generation or private firms raising money to bankroll their plans. The market momentum, which tapered off post budget, seems to have been recharged in the past couple of days.

A few headwinds are yet to be conquered like the sluggish consumer spending in matured economies and high unemployment. What we have heard in the past few days is only a continuation of the ‘green shoots’ theory that led to the three-month rally. The economic and business recovery across the globe will be gradual rather than a swift one. Back home, among the key worries are with regard to the high fiscal deficit and its attendant fallout on inflation and interest rates.

Market Commentary ...

The local bulls have decided to look beyond the budget. The FM’s statements on disinvestment and clarifications on the borrowing programme, coupled with reports of encouraging progress in monsoon have allowed bulls to raise their glasses. A simultaneous rally across global markets has added fuel to the fire.

Spirits are not high when a discount sale is underway in the market; rather happy hours are when you can sell at a profit. The Fed’s minutes released give reason to cheer, though there is nothing fresh about the assessment of the US economy. Still, words like recession may soon end could provide some more ammunition to the bulls. We expect a positive opening, but it would be wise to cash in on the rally rather than get in.

Performance chasing my perk up sentiment for some time but the morning euphoria may not last all day. Assessing the market trend has become quite a task given the heightened volatility. Several more bouts of rallies and reversals could follow in the coming weeks and perhaps months before there is stability.

China's gross domestic product (GDP) expands by 7.9% in the second quarter, beating estimates for a 7.7% expansion, thanks to rising domestic consumption and a strong increase in industrial activity. Consumer and wholesale prices, however, sink lower.

Pre Market Commentary ...

Today, the monsoon seems to have picked up. At least the Mumbaikars felt the rain fury. While some pockets are facing floods, Manipur and Jharkhand have been declared drought-hit. So, the picture is still murky as far as monsoon is concerned.

Meanwhile, the FM has tried to assuage concerns that the humongous borrowing program won’t fuel interest rates or spur inflation. It’s a Herculean task and only time will tell whether he and the RBI manage to achieve it. Fingers crossed on this one.

The PM and India are going places, literally. In a rare honour for the nation, Dr. Manmohan Singh presided over the National Day Parade in Paris. To top it all, the Indian Army spearheaded the march to the tune of "Saare Jahan Se Achcha".

Back home,we would reiterate our warning that one should not get fooled by any short-term spurts or reversals in key indices. Most of Tuesday's gains appear to have come on the back of short covering. Focus on your portfolio and take each day as it comes.

Today,after several days of setbacks, especially post the Budget, the bulls may kick off the day’s proceedings on a strong footing. All thanks to a worldwide rally and of course pick up in monsoon activity. So, put a smile of your face as the key indices are likely to open with a decent gap. Don’t confuse the rally for a broader turnaround in sentiment. Overall, things remain precarious. Concerns still persist over the health of key global economies and western financial institutions.

Back home, an erratic monsoon is giving sleepless nights to farmers and authorities. How the earnings season will unfold is anybody’s guess. There are also worries that inflation and interest rates – the two bugbears of the equity bulls – could rear their ugly heads in the coming months. Volatility is going to be the norm rather than exception. It is tough to catch the highs and lows of the markets. What you can do is keep your eyes wide open and ears to the ground. Stick to a day–to-day regime for now. Pick up some flowers on the way, which are within your reach. As for the stars, for now just keep watching them.
