The MSCI Asia Pacific Index added 3.3% to 143.19 as of 10:58 a.m. in Tokyo. All 10 industry groups advanced on the benchmark, which rose the most since March 25. An index of financial stocks led gains.

Asian markets this Morning ...

Asian markets are trading mixed this morning. The Nikkei in Tokyo was down 192 points or 1.5% at 12,627 while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong dropped 290 points or 1.25%at 22,995. The Kospi in Seoul was flat at 1702 and the Straits Times in Singapore added 6 points or 0.2% at 3037.

Today, we expect the market to open on a cautious note after Friday's surprising rally and on mixed global cues. Though indicators from the technical and derivative side are encouraging, weak fundamentals (both locally as well as globally) and erratic behaviour of the FIIs will keep the market on tenterhooks. The upcoming quarterly results will be keenly followed for ascertaining the impact on future earnings growth. Given the year end considerations, mutual funds may do their best to prevent a slide in their counters today.

The overall market Future Open Interest now stands at mere Rs49,263cr up by Rs4,549cr. FIIs have sold in Index Future by Rs813cr with decrease in Open Interest by 261,513 contracts (26%). In Single Stock Future, they have also sold by Rs104cr with decrease in Open Interest by 256,629 contracts (23%).

In the Index Option segment, they were net buyers to the tune of Rs1199cr with increase in Open Interest by 279,975(62%) contracts. FIIs were net buyers in Cash
segment by Rs248cr (Provisional). DIIs were net buyers in Cash segment by Rs240cr (Provisional).

Optimism returned on Dalal Street after the benchmark Sensex registered its second biggest gain. Short-covering ahead of F&O expiry on Thursday also aided the indices to rebound. Rally in the global markets and buying by FIIs lifted the benchmark Sensex over 5%. As per the provisional figures, FIIs bought over Rs1,200cr yesterday.

The Nifty futures for April series have added a good chunk of shares in open interest and are trading at a premium to the spot Nifty. The put-call ratio seems to have improved in favour of the bulls with strong build up in 4800 puts and 5000 calls.

Today, we expect a strong start given the positive cues from the global markets. US markets closed higher and Asian markets too are trading higher after existing US home sales climbed, fuelling hopes of a revival in the housing sector.

It’s one of the longest breaks the Indian markets have taken in recent years. Hope you are recharged for a choppy week ahead. After a bad start last week, the bulls recovered smartly to post moderate gains in the next couple of days. The extended weekend came as a welcome break for the bulls who had been reeling under the bear onslaught since the second week of January. What should come as further relief is that the US market managed to rebound on Thursday after suffering heavily the previous day. This augers well for the bulls at least this morning.

For the day, we expect a positive start but trading will turn choppy ahead of Thursday's F&O expiry.

Nifty analysis - "Range of 4,500-4,900"

Market sentiment has been extremely bearish over the last couple of months. From the highs of 6,350, the Nifty has been on a steady downtrend breaching the crucial 200-day moving average. However, it found support at its 350-day moving average. In the last two months, it has made several attempts to cross above 61.8% retracement levels of 5,460, which has acted as a strong resistance for the Nifty.

Failing to do so, it fell below 38.2% retracement levels of 4,900 bringing the index lower towards the important support levels of 4,506. On the downside, 4,400 lends strong support. The Nifty will face resistance around the high of 5,019, hit on
12th March, 2008. It has to break above this level in order to reverse its downtrend.

Till then, we could see Nifty moving in the range of 4,500-4,900.
